Maine Reef Blog Being Viewed by the World!

Here is some interesting trivia for you about the Maine Reef Project......

This blog is linked to Sitemeter which is a statistic recording app that tells us how many hits we get each day on our blog. Additionally, it lists the names of the country where those visitors comes from. Amazing but kind of scary at the same time!

Anyway, thought you might enjoy learning what countries have shown up on our reports besides the US in the last few months......

United Kingdom
Portugal
Canada
Poland
Brazil
Germany
Malaysia
Bermuda
Germany
Qatar
Australia
Greece
Egypt
Spain
Russia
France
The Netherlands

I thought this was pretty awesome!

Guess we are indeed part of a "worldwide" project......

Crocheted Fish Pattern

Check out this adorable fish pattern provided by the French Colouer Machine blog. Although the pattern is written in French, the diagrams are very easy to follow if you are a crocheter. It's made with both yarn and plarn  which is plastic yarn made from thin clear plastic grocery type bags cut into strips.

Photo is by MarieMade.

The link to this pattern is also on our patterns page.

Display of Samples of the Maine Reef

The Scarborough Public Library is readying for their first ever Textile Day on Saturday March 24th from 10:30 - 3:30 and the Maine Reef will be there to let their patrons know about the project and how they can participate!

The library has information on display about the Worldwide Project and our Maine efforts, along with free patterns and information about how people can participate. They are also an official drop site for any contribution of completed pieces or donations of yarn and hooks.

Celeste Shinay, Manager of Programming and Development along with the rest of the library staff are very excited about their upcoming event and we are delighted to be included!

Several of our Project volunteers  will be presenting at the event with bells on and will offer crochet instruction, information and encouragement to the public in hopes of increasing community participation in our amazing project...

Thank you Scarborough Library for letting us come and share this opportunity with your patrons!

Jellyfish Gone Wild!

Here's a first crack at a Jelly Fish made with a cake cover donated by Jeremy Ashe, Manager of the Millcreek Hannaford store in S. Portland. The yarn I used is some fun fur that has a ply of polka dots, and turquoise yarn donated by Crystal Shibles.

Thank you both for feeding my passion and contributing to the Maine Reef Project!

I ended up adding more tendrils after this photo was taken but am imagining a large school of these jellies in our "slice" of the ocean :-)

Oh what possibilities!

Free Pattern by Jessica Polka for Sculptured Fronds

One of the fruits of going to SPA was to meet Marilyn Passmore, the editor of the 75 Shells, Corals & Sea Creatures: Knit and Crochet by Jessica Polka. I decided I needed to check out Jessica Polka's blog and found some interesting things including a pattern for free form fronds/Seaweed. Check it out here .It's more of a schematic for how to free form the shapes but an easy to follow idea for anyone who knows how to crochet. I couldn't wait to try it! I have done some similar things but this explanation helped move me beyond what I was originally able to produce!

Here it is and it didn't take very long. I will want to ry this on pipe cleaners or wire. We need some verticle work so will see what I can do with that.

So many things to try!
